Biography:

William S. Cratty graduated summa cum laude with M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Theory/Composition from the University of California at Riverside and San Diego, respectively.  He is also a professional pianist, composer, arranger, orchestrator, published writer, and college instructor for more than twenty years.  He currently teaches at various colleges in California online and face-to-face courses covering a wide variety of disciplines; e.g., Beginning and Intermediate Piano, Beginning and Advanced Music Theory and Musicianship, World Music, Music Appreciation, The Beatles, Rock and Roll History, and Jazz History.

In addition to being an award-winning instructor, Dr. Cratty’s ongoing work with Dr. David Megill and Donald Megill, M.A. on the Music Theory online course series and their companion textbooks is currently utilized by music major students at various community colleges in California.  Dr. Cratty was also a “content advisor” for the Megill’s first online courses and textbooks, respectively:  Music Fundamentals Online and Music Appreciation Online.

Dr. Cratty’s most current project for publication is a commission to create a compilation of intermediate and advanced piano arrangements from the standard pop and classical repertoires where selected pieces are currently being used by his UCSD piano students.

Some other selected works by William Cratty include “The Role of Vagrant Harmonies in Selected Lieder of Strauss, Wolf, and Schoenberg”; “The Concept of ‘Home’ in the Song Cycles of Schubert, Schoenberg, and Berio”; “Tonal Experiments in the Post-Tonal, Pre-Serial Music of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern”; “The Role of Timbre as a Structural Pillar in Selected Works of the 20th Century”; Symphony No. 1; a Symphonic Poem (“The Second Coming”); A Musical Journey with the Beatles: An Annotated Discography; and Introduction to World Music.

Dr. Cratty’s most recent published work (by Kendall-Hunt and Coast Learning Systems) is the implementation of his new Introduction to World Music online course with its corresponding textbook and three compact discs.  For several years prior to the publication, Dr. Cratty had implemented a prototype of the World Music online course first used by Mesa, Foothill, Coastline, MiraCosta, and Irvine Community Colleges.  He is the principal author of the Introduction to World Music Online textbook (co-authors Jeffrey Ainis and Shawn Woodyard) which accompanies its respective online course co-developed with Dr. David Megill and Donald Megill, M.A.  The online course and its accompanying textbook and compact discs were completed and implemented in January 2009 at various colleges nationwide.

Dr. Cratty is an aficionado of “world music” and has taught the subject at several colleges for more than twelve years.  His interest in non-Western music cultures and extensive travels were initially inspired by his mother who is half Chinese and Greek, born in Kunming, China .   William has traveled at length assimilating the music, dance, and cultures of many places around the world, including Africa, Asia, Eastern and Western Europe, Polynesia, and more than two dozen cities and islands of Latin America.

Dr. Cratty also continues to perform piano professionally and compose for piano and orchestra as well as arrange selected piano works for orchestra using music notational software.

Dr. Cratty lives with his wife Helga in San Diego, California.

If any students have any problems logging into the first test, you must first purchase the workbook, which includes a serial number for students to register for access of tests. If you do not know where to find your software license serial number, it is located on the inside front cover of the text. Once you have the serial number, you should register it before your first test. Students will be required to register the serial number ONLY ONCE before taking the first test (it will not be necessary to register it for each consecutive test).

Please note: You have to buy a new textbook, as you will not be able to re-use a serial number from a used book.  (A new textbook can only be purchased at the college bookstore or directly through the publisher).
