Student Fair Exhibit Receives Awards!

Join me in congratulating new Full-time Faculty member, Megan Fairleigh; the Horticulture Department Staff; and the students in the Fair Exhibit Construction Class (Hort 112) on the outstanding exhibit they designed and installed in this year's garden display of "Rhythm of the Rain:  Rainwater Harvesting Garden" at the San Diego County Fair.

This garden is designed to demonstrate how San Diego’s homeowners can integrate rainwater harvesting concepts into their landscapes. The design includes drought tolerant plants, permeable paving, a green roof, a bioswale planted with water cleaning grasses, and a rain barrel to collect rain water for irrigation.  Time has come for San Diegans to be proactive in dealing with our water situation.

This exhibit won five awards announced at the Awards Breakfast on June 11, 2009:

  • AWARD OF MERIT
Eligible if the display is deemed worthy by the judges.

  • CUYAMACA COLLEGE BOTANICAL SOCIETY AWARD
For the best presentation of the landscape display in the drawn landscape plan.
  • SAN DIEGO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY “EXCELLENCE IN HORTICULTURE “AWARD
Most Creative Use of Unique Plant Material.
  • SAN DIEGO FLORAL ASSOCIATION AWARD
Presented to the best landscape entry by a non-commercial, non-professional person or group.
  • UNIQUE LANDSCAPE AWARD
Presented to the most unique display of flowering or foliage plants in a landscape setting.
